Although most of today's spotlight seems to squarely on Sony's big announcements regarding the PS3 console, the company didn't forget to focus some attention on its portable console. In a press release put out today, Sony Computer Entertainment outlined some new plans for its popular handheld system.
First up, the company is planning a new update to the PSP which will give the system better RSS support, used for downloading audio and video podcasts. The new update will also finally allow the PSP to support Macromedia Flash based content. Sony will also begin a new download service for PSP owners which will allow them to download classic PlayStation titles for use on the PSP.
Sony also plans to expand on the PSP's capabilities with new peripheral devices later this year. These include a camera attachment and a GPS receiver, scheduled for the release this fall. The camera will be similar to the PS2's Eye Toy device and will feature motion capture and video chat functions. And like the Eye Toy, the new camera and the GPS receiver can both be incorporated into software for the PSP, allowing developers to add unique features in terms of gameplay.
To get consumers ready for all the new PSP goodies coming down the pipe, Sony also plans to release a new "Base Model" PSP by the end of the month, retailing for 9 US. The Base Model pack is a basic PSP unit, AC adaptor, and battery pack. Gamers in the US and Europe will get the familiar black PSP unit in the Base Model packs, while Japanese gamers will be treated to the Ceramic White PSP in their packs. Consumers will be on their own when it comes to picking up a MemoryStick, headphones, and other extras found in previous packs.
