Though the PSP Go doesn't make use of Sony's proprietary UMD format, that's not the only thing that the handheld is incompatible with. The new iteration of the PSP won't be able to make use of any of the accessories designed for previous versions of the device. That is, unless you purchase the Converter Cable Adapter.
The awkward looking add-on makes the PSP Go compatible with all peripherals for the PSP 1000-3000. It won't ship with the Go however, and will instead launch in Japan on December 24 for 1980 yen (or, around US). It's expected to be released in other territories at some point in January of next year.
Sony also announced a Bluetooth headset receiver for the PSP Go, which will launch the same day as the cable converter, for 4980 yen (or, around US). On launch day (October 1), meanwhile, new PSP Go owners will be able to buy the following add-ons:
- Cradle .99
- AV Cable .99
- Component AV Cable .99
- USB Cable .99
- AC Adaptor .99
- Display Protection Film (two pack) .99
- Traveler Case (in Lake Blue and Black) .99
- Soft Carrying Case .99
- In-Ear Headset .99
- 2GB Memory Stick Micro + Duo Adaptor .99
- 4GB Memory Stick Micro + Duo Adaptor .99
- 8GB Memory Stick Micro + Duo Adaptor .99 (will release shortly after launch)
One of the major selling points of the PSP Go is its slick design, so it's a bit strange to see Sony release a peripheral that almost totally ruins that. Still, for those with numerous PSP add-ons who plan on upgrading, it could be a worthwhile purchase.
