Samsung’s Galaxy S9 May Combine Face & Iris Recognition

Samsung’s Galaxy S9 lineup may combine facial recognition and iris scanning into a single solution meant to be used for unlocking the upcoming devices, blogger Maxwell Weinbach reported Sunday, citing a teardown of the system Settings app that comes as part of the latest Android 8.0 Oreo beta for the Galaxy Note 8. The location of the references to the feature also implies the solution will eventually be coming to other Samsung-made smartphones via an over-the-air update. Called “Intelligent Scan,” the service supposedly combines Samsung’s biometric authentication technologies into a single package with the goal of making it as secure and convenient as possible. The video below is understood to be Samsung’s official visualization of the feature that will presumably be shown to users within the Settings app.

One code string discovered during the teardown specifically says “Unlock your phone using combined face and iris scanning,” with another one claiming that relying on the two services together improves both security and accuracy. It’s presently unclear whether the South Korean tech giant would still provide users with the option of using iris and face recognition individually should Intelligent Scan be rolled out to eligible devices, though one excerpt from the newly discovered code does appear to imply that as it describes a system message that’s meant to notify users the feature will be turned off if both face and iris recognition are disabled. The exact inner workings of the functionality remain unclear and the code makes no claims in regards to the speed of the technology compared to using face or iris authentication individually.

The discovery is in line with previous reports that Samsung is looking to enhance the biometric security capabilities of its ultra-premium smartphones, with the company supposedly equipping both the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9 Plus with new and improved iris scanners. Should Intelligent Scan eventually be rolled out to all users, it will likely be distributed as part of an Android 8.0 Oreo update for eligible flagships. The Galaxy S9 series is widely expected to run Oreo-based Samsung Experience out of the box and was already confirmed as being set for a February 25th launch. The two flagships will be released globally on March 16th following a 15-day pre-order period, according to recent rumors.
