The South Korean tech giant Samsung has announced that Samsung Pay is now available in Mexico. In order to launch the service in the country, the device maker coordinated with a number of financial institutions including the payment providers American Express, MasterCard, Visa, and Mexican banks Banorte, Banregio, Citibanamex, HSBC, and Santander. Aside from the credit cards issued by the major Mexican banks, Samsung Pay is also compatible with a variety of loyalty cards, including those issued by Gandhi, Cinepolis, and Avis.

Samsung also highlighted in its announcement the advantages of using its payment service over competing solutions. Samsung Pay takes advantage of both Near Field Communication (NFC) and Magnetic Secure Transmission technologies. The latter technology allows people to use the payment service even in establishments that are still equipped with traditional magnetic card readers. In contrast, other payment services are only compatible with card readers that utilize the NFC technology. Moreover, the South Korean device maker mentioned that its payment solution uses three levels of security in order to secure the transaction, namely biometric authentication using the fingerprint and iris scanners, tokenization and integration with Samsung Knox, the company’s proprietary security solution.

On its website, the smartphone manufacturer stated that in the near future, it will roll out an update that will install the Samsung Pay app to compatible handsets, while new compatible smartphones will ship with the app pre-installed. Among the devices that support Samsung Pay include the company’s flagship devices like the Samsung Galaxy Note 8, the Galaxy Note 5, the Galaxy S8, and the Galaxy S8 Plus, as well as a number of mid-range smartphones. After installing the application, users should then enter their Samsung account into the app and register their fingerprints and numeric PIN. Users could then register up to 10 cards either by scanning their credit or debit cards using the device’s camera or by manually entering the card’s details. After launching in South Korea back in 2015, the device maker expanded its payment service in a number of countries. In 2016, Samsung Pay was launched in countries like Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Russia and Spain, while in 2017, the service was expanded to Hong Kong, India, Malaysia, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Arab Emirates and the United Kingdom.
